What Endpoint Security Tools Do

Endpoint security tools protect the laptops, desktops, servers, and phones your people work from. The baseline is antivirus and anti-malware; endpoint detection and response adds behavioural monitoring and the ability to isolate a compromised machine; device management enforces disk encryption, screen lock, automatic updates, and the ability to wipe a lost device.

For a distributed startup the endpoint is the perimeter. The free tools on this page cover open-source EDR agents, the built-in protections in Windows and macOS that most companies never fully enable, mobile device management with free tiers, and hardening checkers that show where a laptop falls short of the CIS Benchmark.

How to Choose a Endpoint Security Tool

  • Enforce full-disk encryption, screen lock, and automatic OS updates on every device before choosing an EDR product.
  • Pick an EDR agent that reports to a central console; per-device antivirus with no visibility does not satisfy auditors.
  • If staff use personal devices, choose a mobile device management tool that can separate work data and wipe only that.
  • Check that the tool can produce a device inventory with encryption and patch status; it is asked for in every security questionnaire.

Endpoint Security Tools: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between antivirus and EDR?

Antivirus blocks known malicious files by signature. EDR (endpoint detection and response) watches process behaviour, network connections, and persistence mechanisms to catch attacks that do not use a known file, records what happened, and lets you isolate the device remotely. Modern free and paid products combine both.

Is the built-in security in Windows and macOS enough?

For a very small team, the built-in protections are a reasonable start if disk encryption, firewall, automatic updates, and the built-in anti-malware are all enforced and you can prove it. Once you need central visibility, incident response, or compliance evidence, add a managed EDR or MDM tool.

Do we need mobile device management for a 10-person company?

If those 10 people read company email on phones, MDM or at least app-level protection is worth it, because a lost unlocked phone is a data breach. Several MDM products offer free tiers for small device counts.
