What Email Security Tools Do
Email security tools defend the channel most attacks start in. On the inbound side they filter phishing, malware attachments, and spoofed senders. On the outbound side they publish and enforce SPF, DKIM, and DMARC so nobody can send mail that appears to come from your domain, and they report on who is trying.
A small business can raise its email defences considerably in an afternoon: check the domain's SPF and DMARC records, fix the gaps, turn on the phishing protections its mail provider already includes, and add a reporting tool so DMARC failures are visible. How to Choose a Email Security Tool
- Start with a DMARC analyser; it shows whether your domain can be spoofed and which legitimate senders are misconfigured.
- Keep a single SPF record with no more than 10 DNS lookups; multiple SPF records are a permanent error.
- Use the phishing and malware filtering built into Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace before adding a third-party gateway.
- Add a phishing simulation tool once the technical controls are in place, so staff training targets real weaknesses.

What are SPF, DKIM, and DMARC?
SPF lists the servers allowed to send mail for your domain. DKIM signs each message so the receiver can verify it was not altered. DMARC tells receivers what to do when a message fails those checks (monitor, quarantine, or reject) and sends you reports. All three are DNS records, and all three are free.
Why does my DMARC report show failures from my own senders?
Usually because a marketing platform, CRM, or helpdesk sends on your behalf and is not included in SPF or is not DKIM-signing with your domain. The DMARC analysers on this page identify the sender so you can add it or move it to a subdomain.
Do free email security tools protect against business email compromise?
They reduce it. DMARC at reject stops exact-domain spoofing, and filtering catches most lookalike domains. What remains is a process problem: payment and banking changes should require verbal confirmation through a known number, which no tool replaces.
